María González Bolaños has been living on $62 a month since she lost her medical benefits in March because of an oversight in her citizenship process.
The 71-year-old who came to the United States from Cuba a decade ago has survived on that check from the National Church Residences, food from Meals on Wheels and More, subsidized housing from the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program and the help of Family Eldercare, the agency that nominated Bolaños for the Austin American-Statesman’s Season for Caring program.
