Opinions split on Beavers vs. Horns

Our Take

Austin American-Statesman - - C SPORTS - Continued from C Bohls and Golden are split on Manny Diaz’s return.

distract this team. The developments also could motivate the players to show they’re on the right track.

Golden: It will become as big of a distraction as the Horns allow it to become. Brown suspended four players before the 2000 Cotton Bowl, and the team did not play well in their absence, losing 27-6 to Arkansas. The guess here is Texas will play well tonight.

3. Who’s the highest NFL draft pick playing in this game?

Bohls: I think Oregon’s shutdown corner, Jordan Poyer, could go in the first two rounds, but Texas’ Kenny Vaccaro may be the best safety in this draft. He has proven to be a versatile player who can stick with opponents’ best receivers from the nickel position. He can be a punishing tackler as well and figures to have a long NFL career after going late in the first round.

Golden: Vaccaro, whose big-hit ability and cover skills should be on display for all to see. He could sneak into the first round of the draft, along with teammate Alex Okafor.

4. Which Longhorn could have a breakout performance?

Bohls: While we have seen glimpses of his ability, freshman linebacker Peter Jinkens is poised to have a breakout game against Oregon State. He runs well and delivers big hits, leading Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz to say Jinkens “has added a little bit of spunk.”

Golden: Since this will be largely an offensive game, expect the wide receivers to take center stage. Freshman Cayleb Jones made a couple of highlight-reel plays during the regular season; look for him to be on the end on a long pass play against the Beavers.

5. Will this be Manny Diaz’s last game as Texas’ defensive coordinator?

Bohls: Presumably. His decision to withdraw his name from consideration for the Florida International head coaching
