Crews have been busy all year on road projects, and in the 10th in­stall­ment of Get­ting There’s an­nual re­view, Ben Wear looks at the area’s largest roads un­der con­struc­tion.

Project: Ex­tend the Texas 71 ex­press­way east to near U.S. 183, in­clud­ing an un­der­pass at East River­side Drive, and frontage roads along­side the new ex­press lanes. Length: 1 mile Pro­jected cost: $35 mil­lion (Orig­i­nal es­ti­mate: $43 mil­lion) Start: Fe­bru­ary 2012 Es­ti­mated com­ple­tion: Sum­mer 2014 Project up­date: Work­ing on the west­bound frontage road and be­gin­ning to build the east-to-west turn­around bridge.

Juana Rosas sits at the din­ner ta­ble with four of her five chil­dren to help with home­work. Rosas works sev­eral jobs to pro­vide for her chil­dren. ‘I strug­gle so much that it hurts, but this is about my chil­dren,’ she says. ‘They come first.’
