Nationals’ Werth (wrist) could be back by August

A CT scan showed two small fractures in the left wrist of Washingt on Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth, MLB.com repor t ed.

Werth, who was hit by a pi tch May 15, had the wrist examined at the Mayo Clinic. He could return by August if his rehab goes to plan.

This is the third time the 36-year-old has suffered a broken lef t wrist.

In 2012, he missed 75 games after breaking the wrist while sliding to make a catch.

Werth sai d the most recent injury reminds him of the one he sustained in 2005 while playing for the Dodgers. He missed 44 games to begin the season af ter being inj ured on the final day of spring training.

Werth missed the entire 2006 season after surgery to repai r ligaments in the wrist.

Right-handed reli ever Scott Atchison went on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained lef t ankle.

Making the move before opening a fourgame series in Seattle on Thursday night, Cl eveland also was without infielder Carl os Santana af ter he went on the paternity list.

Atchison was 1-1 with a 5.74 ERA in 19 relief appearance­s for the Indians this season. This is his fifth career stint on the disabled list.

To take the open roster spots, the Indians selected the contract of outfielder Jerry Sands and recalled right-hander Austin Adams from Triple-A Columbus.

Outfielder Collin Cowgill went on the 15-day disabled list, retroactiv­e to May 26, with a sprained right wrist, which he hurt while taking batting practice Sunday.

The team also designated outfielder Marc Krauss for assignment and selected the contract of outfielder Alfredo Marte from Triple-A Salt Lake. Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhui­s also repor t ed to the team a day after he was acquired from the New York Mets.

Robinson Cano wasn’t in the lineup for the first ti me this season Thursday bec ause of flulike symptoms. Manager Lloyd McClendon said the symptoms popped up overnight after the team had concluded its trip and returned to Seattle.
