Other college coaches might be keeping everyone guessing as to who will be their starting quarterback, but Texas State’s Everett Withers has no problem sharing his plan.

“Tyler Jones is our starting quarterback,” said Withers, who’s in his first season with the Bobcats. “Not to say that Eddie Printz hadn’t done a good job; he’s still learning and growing in the offense, and he’s got a ton of talent. He’ll keep working and hopefully he gives us a 1 and 1A.”

Former Mansfield Timberview quarterback Devin Williams — one of the Bobcats’ top 2016 recruits — has been ruled academically ineligible. The three-star recruit will have to attend a junior college for at least two years and obtain an associate’s degree before he can transfer into a four-year school.

Williams tweeted that he plans to enroll in a junior college in January and continue to play football.

“I will be cheering on my brothers this year, and I know y’all will handle business,” Williams tweeted.

Captains announced: Junior linebacker Gabe Loyd was the top vote-getter in the team’s balloting for captains after the final scrimmage of fall camp Wednesday. Junior tight end Gabe Schrade, senior left tackle Ryan Melton and Jones also were voted captains.

Ripley wins kicking job: Redshirt freshman Marcus Ripley has won the kicking job over sophomore James Sherman. Sherman appeared in five games last year, going 6 for 10 on extra points and making one field goal.

Walk-ons rewarded: Five walk-ons have been awarded scholarships — junior linebacker Louis Rubin, sophomore defensive end Ishmael Davis and sophomore wide receivers Tyler Watts, A.J. Krawczyk and Kolby Kolek.

Watts and Davis received first-team reps during fall camp, and Watts was the primary slot receiver. Davis converted to defensive end from linebacker in the spring, and former running backs Rubin and Krawczyk are playing new positions as well.

Soccer team welcomes back Conner: The Bobcats started the season with a pair of 2-0 victories.

They beat Lamar on Aug. 19 and Prairie View A&M on Sunday, the 100th home victory for the program. Their third game was at McNeese State late Friday.

It was a welcome return for the team’s head coach, Kat Conner, who missed the 2015 season while battling ovarian cancer. Before the season opener, Conner said she is cancer-free.

“I’m really, really excited about this year,” Conner said. “For me, I’m just grateful and blessed, and I just appreciate all the support I’ve gotten from family, friends, alumni ... my D-I peers and even reporters. I just really appreciate the support because it does pay off when you’re in that battle.”
