Backup QB bolts Alabama program

-

Alabama redshirt freshman quarterback Blake Barnett has left the program and withdrawn from school, coach Nick Saban announced in a statement Thursday. The former five-star recruit from Corona, Calif., started the opener against Southern California for No. 1 Alabama.

Since then, freshman Jalen Hurts has claimed the starting job.

Cooper Bateman and David Cornwell are now the backups to Hurts.

Barnett played in three games, completing 11 of 19 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns.

Alabama linebacker Tim Williams has been charged with carrying a pistol without a permit. Campus police arrested Williams on the misdemeanor charge about 1 a.m. Thursday in his vehicle in a grocery store parking lot. Court documents say officers smelled marijuana coming from Williams’ parked car and found a bag containing the drug in the center console and a Glock 41 pistol under the driver’s seat.

A passenger said he was holding the marijuana for someone, according to the court filings. Williams told police he had bought the gun while at home in Louisiana three weeks earlier and was given a temporary permit. He didn’t have the permit with him but did produce a receipt. Williams was released on $300 bail.

Nebraska: If Michael Rose-Ivey and teammates want to kneel during the national anthem again, their next opportunity will be the Nov. 5 game at Ohio State.

Rose-Ivey, Mohamed Barry and DaiShon Neal each took a knee on the sideline as the anthem was sung at Northwestern last week. Their action sparked statewide debate about whether it was an appropriate setting for their protest of police violence and racial injustice.

But teams are in the locker room during the anthem at Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium.
