Cycling: Frenchman Arnaud Demare won the first stage of the Paris-Nice race Sunday, holding off Julian Alaphilippe in a sprint to the line at the end of the 92-mile trek around Bois d’Arcy in the suburbs of Paris.
Skiing: Canadian Alex Harvey won the men’s 50-kilometer freestyle cross-country ski race at the Nordic worlds in Lahti, Finland.
Soccer: Lawmaker Igor Lebedev, who sits in the Russian parliament, has proposed an unorthodox solution to the country’s problems with soccer hooliganism ahead of next year’s World Cup — legalize it and make it a spectator sport. Organized groups of Russian fans, many with martial arts training, fought English fans in Marseille during last year’s European Championship.
