PRE-K BILLS AND THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE
Several lawmakers have continued the push to expand prekindergarten in Texas. Some of the bills filed this legislative session include:
■ House Bill 2282, sponsored by state Rep. Eric Johnson, D-Dallas, would fund high-quality, fullday pre-K for qualifying school districts through the existing school finance formula. Many
other bills filed inthe House and Senate also address full-day pre-K on a universal level or for certain students.
■ House Bill 1389, sponsored by state Rep. Helen Giddings, D-Dallas, would cap pre-K classrooms at 22 students.
■ House Bill 480, sponsored by state Rep. Cindy Burkett, R-Sunnyvale, would allow the operation of prekindergarten-only charter schools.
