Texas scores on three penalty shots for vic­tory

The Texas Stars con­verted three penalty shots in a shootout against the Stock­ton Heat to take a 5-4 win at the H-E-B Cen­ter at Cedar Park on Satur­day night.

Gemel Smith was the most valu­able Star on Satur­day as he as­sisted on three goals and scored the win­ning goal in the 3-2 shootout. Ethan Werek and Travis Morin also scored in the tiebreaker. Mike McMurtry and Matt Man­gene each scored a goal and as­sisted on another to help the Stars im­prove to 30-31-1-4.

The teams al­ter­nated goals through­out the game and nei­ther scored in over­time, forc­ing the shootout.

Matej Stran­sky opened the scor­ing with a power play goal in the first pe­riod.

Oliver Kyling­ton an­swered Stran­sky’s goal 2:25 into the sec­ond pe­riod. The teams com­bined for six goals in the mid­dle frame.

Man­gene scored to make it 2-1 for Texas, as­sisted by McMurtry and Smith.

Tyler Wother­spoon tied the game again with a power play goal 7:39 into the pe­riod.

McMurtry scored his goal less than a minute later to put Texas up 3-2. Less than 30 sec­onds af­ter McMurtry scored, Mike An­ge­lidis tied the game again.

Bran­don DeFazio scored the Stars’ fi­nal goal in reg­u­la­tion with the help of Smith’s third as­sist of the game.

An­drew Man­gia­pane’s goal at 14:46 into the fi­nal pe­riod set the stage for an over­time pe­riod.

Man­gia­pane and Mark Jankowski scored back-to-back goals in the shootout.
