Evans aims to break Bowie’s 1,600 record
Senior who has sought goal for two years will compete at Texas Relays.
A school record in the 1,600 meters would be Bowie senior Carolyn Evans’ graduation gift to herself.
Evans has run the race in 5 minutes, 9 seconds. The school record is 5:06, set by Shaunte Alexander in 1994. The record will be broken soon, Evans and longtime Bowie track coach Rita Gonzales said.
Evans hopes to become Bowie’s new 1,600 queen this week- end. She’s among four Bulldogs who will compete at the Texas Relays on Friday and Saturday at Mike Myers Stadium.
The Stephen F. Austin-bound Evans has been seeking the record book for about two years, she said during a workout Thursday on the Bowie track. She also is looking forward to competing in the Relays for the first time.
“It’s something I started to think about when I was a sophomore and I was getting to be more competitive in track,” Evans said. “This year I knew I’d have a better chance because I’m getting faster.”
