Sus­pi­cious pack­age sick­ens IRS work­ers

Ten In­ter­nal Rev­enue Ser­vice em­ploy­ees be­came ill Fri­day af­ter com­ing in con­tact with a sus­pi­cious pack­age at the agency’s of­fice in Kansas City, Mo., lo­cal of­fi­cials said.

The em­ploy­ees com­plained of nau­sea, di­ar­rhea and vom­it­ing, James Gar­rett, a deputy Kansas City fire chief, said. Am­bu­lances were at the scene, but Gar­rett said the in­juries were be­lieved to be “not se­ri­ous at all.”

Gar­rett said emer­gency work­ers “iso­lated the pack­age” and “haven’t found any­thing else.” The build­ing was not evac­u­ated.

Gar­rett said he did not know what was in­side the pack­age. He said the pack­age’s con­tents and the sender’s in­tent would be the sub­ject of a sep­a­rate, fed­eral in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
