Police ID dead man in kidnap attempt
A woman police say was abducted and shot remains in hospital.
Police have identified the man who died from gunshot wounds Wednesday in an incident that authorities believe began as an aggravated kidnapping in Central Austin.
Tomas Vences-Martinez, 25, was identified by police Friday morning.
Vences-Martinez died on the 4400 block of Aqua Verde Drive around 3 p.m., according to the Travis County sheriff’s office. Authorities said they found him while responding to a reported kidnapping in the area, along with a woman who had been shot and seriously injured. The woman told authorities VencesMartinez had kidnapped her.
Authorities say the incident began at the parking lot of the H-E-B on Burnet Road and Koenig Lane around 1:30 p.m. Witnesses called in to say they’d seen a man pull a woman and a child into a car, officials said.
Austin police officials confirmed Friday the woman and VencesMartinez knew each other, and that the child was a family member of the woman, but not her son.
Around 2:40 p.m., the woman
