Double play derails Round Rock rally at Colorado Springs

Freddy Peralta got Carlos Garay to hit into a double play in the fourth inning, leading the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to a 7-4 win over the visiting Round Rock Express in the first game of a doublehead­er on Sunday. The second game of Sunday’s doublehead­er was not completed in time for this edition.

The double play came with the bases loaded and ended a one-run inning for the Express.

Colorado Springs started the scoring in the first inning when Brett Phillips hit an RBI single and then scored on a double by Ji-Man Choi.

After the teams traded runs, the Express cut into the deficit in the sixth inning when Tommy Joseph hit an RBI double, driving in Willie Calhoun.

The Sky Sox later tacked on four runs in the sixth, including a solo home run by Jacob Nottingham.

Colorado Springs righthande­r Peralta (3-0) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings. Opposing starter David Hurlbut (0-1) took the loss in the Pacific Coast League game after giving up three runs and four hits over three innings

Express 8, Sky Sox 6, late Saturday: The Express scored four runs over the final three innings to beat Colorado Springs for their second win of the season.

Destin Hood hit two home runs as he went 2-for-5 from the plate. Tommy Joseph also hit a homer as he drove in two runs on the night.

Calhoun went 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx had a rough start for Round Rock, allowing six runs on eight hits in five innings. The effort out of the bullpen from Tayler Scott and Jose Leclerc helped the Express seal the win.

Scott picked up his first win after allowing no runs on no hits in two innings. Leclerc struck Christian Bethancour­t out with a runner on first to end the game for his first save of the season.

Trailing by two runs entering the seventh, the Express tied the game on Joseph’s two-run homer.

Calhoun’s RBI single gave the Express the lead in the top of the eighth before Hood hit a solo shot in the ninth. Hood hit his first home run in the top of the second to tie the game.
