CAHOKIA MOUNDS STATE HIS­TORIC SITE, IL

Me­an­der around the eerie, 1,000-year- old earthen mounds of an­cient Cahokia in south­ern Illi­nois— and rest easy know­ing that ar­chae­ol­o­gists ex­ca­vated more than 250 hu­man skele­tons from one. From the ver­ti­cal po­si­tion­ing of their fi ngers, sci­en­tists con­cluded the Ca­hokians had been dig­ging in the sand, very much alive, and try­ing to pull them­selves out of the mass burial.

DO IT Check out the Ca­hokians’ earth­work on the Na­ture/Cul­ture Trail, a 6.2-mile cir­cuit. From the park­ing lot ( 38.654172, -90.058643), do the loop clock­wise: Pass the Twin Mounds, then come up on Mound 72 near mile .5.
