Tall Trees Grove Redwood National Park, CA
Walk among forest giants on this remote 4-mile lollipop-loop.
Secure a permit at the Kuchel Visitor Center, where you’ll get directions and a code to the locked entry. Past the gate, drive another 6 miles to the Tall Trees trailhead. Set out through a mixed understory of fir and rhododendron (blooming May and June) to the gravel bank of Redwood Creek at mile 1.5. From there, tackle the 1-mile loop clockwise beneath its namesake behemoths, then retrace your steps back.
The gravel bars along Redwood Creek are the only place in the park where dispersed camping is allowed (free permit required). At mile 2, take the social path to the creek and snag a spot at least a quarter-mile from the main grove. Caution: In September, the Park Service removes the footbridges that help hikers follow the trail across the creek. After December, the water is often too high to ford.
