Glen Burnie defeats N. Point, 5-4, for title

Hein finishes with 7 goals, 3 assists over Gophers’ two wins

Glen Burnie’s Wade Hein did plenty of scoring for the Glen Burnie boys lacrosse team Saturday.

With seven goals already in the two games at the Okey O’Connor Tournament at Glen Burnie, Hein made his biggest play when he fed a teammate for a late score.

After the Gophers had watched North Point rally from an early four-goal deficit to tie the game, Hein fed James Burgess for the go-ahead goal with 2:37 left to lead the Gophers to a 5-4 win in the championship game of the tournament.

Hein, who had four goals and two assists in the Gophers’ overtime victory over Great Mills in the first game, finished with three goals and an assist in the championship game. He also assisted on the overtime game-winner to beat Great Mills.

“Great wins. The guys played well,” Hein said. “Our passes were a little bit rusty, but we’re out here every day busting our butts.”

Glen Burnie coach Ricky Deitchman had called a timeout just before the Gophers took possession after a long stretch of offense during which the Eagles nearly went ahead. Instead of designing the play Hein and Burgess ran, Deitchman wanted the Gophers to do something different.

“I told them to hold the ball and pull it out. We had plenty of time,” Deitchman said. “I guess they saw a look and made it happen.”

Burgess’ goal was the first for the Gophers since they took a 4-0 late in the first quarter and appeared to be on their way to a comfortable win after rallying for the overtime victory in the first game. The Eagles scored their four goals in the second and third quarters to tie the game and had plenty of possessions in the fourth, but were never able to go ahead.

“Me and Wade always interact like that. As soon as he saw me, he said he was going to get it to me,” Burgess said. “I saw that open goal, so I shot it.”

Will Parker added a goal, James Wright and John Roelofs each had an assist and Kolby Hood stopped seven shots for the Gophers, who are off to a 2-1 start after going 6-9 in 2016 for the program’s best record since 1997.
