Mets: OF Yoe­nis Ce­s­pedes home­red with two outs in the bot­tom of the 10th in­ning to give the Mets a 2-1 vic­tory over the Mar­lins Mon­day night in the first game of a piv­otal se­ries be­tween Na­tional League play­off con­tenders. The Mets pulled even with the Mar­lins for sec­ond place in the NL East. Mar­lins OF Ichiro Suzuki had two hits to give him 3,011 for his ca­reer and break a tie with Wade Boggs for 27th place on the all-time list. He also scored the Mar­lins’ lone run.

Red Sox: RHP Rick Por­cello be­came the ma­jors’ first 18-game win­ner and the first Red Sox pitcher in 70 years to open a sea­son 13-0 in Fen­way Park as he went seven solid in­nings in a 9-4 vic­tory over the Rays. OF Mookie Betts hit his 30th homer and drove in two runs for the Red Sox, who hold the Amer­i­can League’s first wild-card spot but had lost four of five. 2B Brock Holt and 3B Travis Shaw each had three hits.

Blue Jays: 3B Josh Don­ald­son hit his fourth home run in two days and OF Jose Bautista also went deep in sup­port of RHP Marco Estrada as the Blue Jays main­tained a two-game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East.

Pi­rates: RHP Ger­rit Cole was placed on the 15-day dis­abled list with right el­bow in­flam­ma­tion. Cole pitched five shaky in­nings in a 5-4 loss to the Astros on Wed­nes­day and then let the team know he ex­pe­ri­enced some dis­com­fort dur­ing the out­ing. He had a 6.08 ERA in five Au­gust starts. ... Man­ager Clint Hur­dle said the de­ci­sion to have INF Jung Ho Kang con­tinue re­hab­bing his left shoul­der in­jury in In­di­anapo­lis in­stead of Chicago had noth­ing to do with an in­ves­ti­ga­tion into an al­le­ga­tion that Kang sex­u­ally as­saulted a 23-year-old woman dur­ing the team’s June visit to Chicago.

Car­di­nals: RHP Mike Leake went on the 15-day DLbe­cause of shin­gles, while re­liever Dean Kiekhe­fer was re­called from Triple-A Mem­phis. Leake, who signed a five-year, $80 mil­lion deal in De­cem­ber, is 9-9 with a 4.56 ERA for the Car­di­nals.
