They are look­ing to be­come the first team to open and fin­ish a sea­son ranked No. 1 since USC did in 2004. Alabama of­fen­sive co­or­di­na­tor Lane Kif­fin was fired as Tro­jans head coach five games into the 2013 sea­son.

The buzz: This game at NRG Sta­dium in Hous­ton is one of eight neu­tral-site matchups on open­ing week­end. The Soon­ers have lost their last three neu­tral-site games, in­clud­ing last year’s 37-17 Or­ange Bowl loss to Clem­son in a na­tional semi­fi­nal. The Cougars open a sea­son ranked for the first time since 1991, when they were in the South­west Con­fer­ence.
