Ledecky among Mary­land fi­nal­ists for na­tional award

Katie Ledecky of Bethesda was nom­i­nated as one of ten fi­nal­ists for the Women’s Sports Foun­da­tion’s Sportswoman of the Year Award on Fri­day. Ledecky made his­tory this past month at the Rio Olympics when she be­came the sec­ond woman in his­tory to win the 200-, 400-, and 800-me­ter freestyle events at a sin­gle games. Ledecky also won an ad­di­tional gold and a sil­ver medal as the an­chor for the 800 freestyle re­lay and 400 freestyle re­lay. Wheel­chair marathoner and U.S. Par­a­lympian Tatyana McFad­den of Clarksville and Rio 53-kilo­gram wrestling gold medal­ist He­len Maroulis of Rockville were also named fi­nal­ists. The win­ner will be an­nounced Oct. 19 at the 37th an­nual Sa­lute to Women in Sports event at Cipri­ani Wall Street in New York af­ter a 50-50 vote from the pub­lic and the WSF awards com­mit­tee. COLLEGE FOOT­BALL: Se­nior run­ning back Dar­ius Vic­tor ran for two touch­downs but vis­it­ing Tow­son fell, 56-20, to South Florida (1-0) on Satur­day night. Red­shirt sopho­more quar­ter­back Mor­gan Ma­ha­lak threw for 165 yards in his de­but for the Tigers (0-1). Vic­tor fin­ished with 70 yards on 23 car­ries and be­came the fourth Tiger to eclipse the 3,000-yard mark on an 8-yard touch­down run in the third quar­ter. NATIONALWOMEN’SSOCCERLEAGUE: The Wash­ing­ton Spirit (11-3-3) clinched a play­off spot with a 1-1 draw against the vis­it­ing Western New York Flash (8-5-4). Spirit for­ward Katie Sten­gel scored in 64th minute, but Flash mid­fielder Sam Mewis tied the game from the top of the 18-yard box in the 86th minute. Wash­ing­ton goal­keeper Kelsey Wys had 12 saves. WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Caris­sima Cutrona scored in the 73rd and 77th min­utes to lead host Buf­falo (2-2-2) to a 3-1 vic­tory over Navy (1-4-1).
