Hamp­stead’s Zaferes wins bronze in world se­ries at Ed­mon­ton

Katie Zaferes of Hamp­stead fin­ished in 56 min­utes and 56 se­conds to win bronze as part of a sweep of the podium by the United States at the World Triathlon Se­ries on Sun­day in Ed­mon­ton, Al­berta. Zaferes’ bronze is her eighth ca­reer WTS medal and sec­ond this sea­son; the North Car­roll grad­u­ate won her first WTS gold in Ham­burg, Ger­many, one month be­fore fin­ish­ing 18th in her Olympic de­but in Rio de Janeiro. Sum­mer Cook won the gold with a time of 56:49 to earn her first WTSpodium fin­ish and Olympian Sarah True took sil­ver in 56:52. The sweep, which came with­out17-time WTScham­pion and Rio Olympics gold medal­ist Gwen Jor­gensen, marked the fourth sweep by any na­tion in the se­ries’ seven-year his­tory. All three U.S. women, plus Jor­gensen, will com­pete at the In­ter­na­tional Triathlon Union Grand Fi­nal, which de­ter­mines world cham­pi­onship medal­ists based on WTS points from the en­tire sea­son, Sept. 17 in Cozumel, Mex­ico.
