Heat to shut, force early clo­sures at some schools

Bal­ti­more County pub­lic schools with­out air con­di­tion­ing will close to­day as tem­per­a­tures are forecast to hit 93 de­grees and the heat in­dex could reach 101. Bal­ti­more city schools will close three hours early. It is the sec­ond straight day of clo­sures for both dis­tricts. Tem­per­a­tures are forecast to spike this week as much as 12 de­grees above nor­mal, ac­cord­ing to the Na­tional Weather Ser­vice. Half-day prekinder­garten and all af­ter-school ac­tiv­i­ties will also be can­celed in the city schools. The county school board voted last week to mod­ify its heat pol­icy. Now, schools with­out air con­di­tion­ing may re­main open un­less the heat in­dex is forecast to reach 90 de­grees by 11 a.m.
