Clinton’s tired campaign

Baltimore Sun - - FROM PAGE ONE - Jon McGill, Baltimore

Hillary Clinton’s remark calling Donald Trump supporters a “basket of deplorables” was clearly a mistake — even though it is equally clear that Mr. Trump relies on a voter base that includes white supremacists, bigots and xenophobes (“Trump, in Baltimore, calls Clinton’s ’deplorable’ remark disqualifying,” Sept. 12).

The former secretary of state and her advisers seem intent on making the campaign into a referendum on Mr. Trump, but that’s a mistake.

A better campaign would promote themes and policies that actually address the issues we face: Give us genuine strategies that address our stumbling economy, our abandoned cities, our class-based (pun intended) education system and our national security issues.

Tell us where, when and how we will invest in the future; if you wish to fight the negativism and narrow-mindedness of Mr. Trump, give us visionary perspectives, not platitudes. Let Mr. Trump and his supporters race down their blind alleys while your campaign makes explicit to young voters that their future is likely more secure if we embrace the best American values and virtues.

Many Trump supporters are in his camp because decades of Democratic policy mediocrity seem to offer them little or nothing.

What is really deplorable is that we might allow a Trump victory because the alternatives seem so tired, vague and unadventurous. The electorate deserves better.
