UM, Rutgers announce ’17 football-wrestling doubleheader in Bronx
Maryland announced Tuesday that it will take part in a football and wrestling doubleheader against Rutgers at Yankee Stadium in 2017. The “Big Ten Battle in the Bronx” will be hosted by Rutgers on Nov. 4. The outdoor wrestling match will precede the football game in the afternoon. It’s the first outdoor wrestling match at Yankee Stadium. In a statement, Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said: “We are thrilled to participate in such a prestigious event at one of the world’s most iconic sporting venues. I am excited that our fans will have the opportunity to view both our football and wrestling programs on such a unique platform.” Maryland leads the all-time football series against Rutgers, 6-5, dating to 1920. The teams have split their two Big Ten Conference meetings. The game will be Maryland’s first in a Major League Baseball stadium since it played Oregon State at then-AT&T Park in San Francisco in 2007. While Maryland never has played at the original or current Yankee Stadium, it did defeat Syracuse, 20-0, at the Polo Grounds on Oct. 24, 1936. Ticket information for the “Big Ten Battle in the Bronx” is still to be announced.
