Andrea Kraus of Baltimore had to work overtime in two matches, but she prevailed in both and this morning she will play Ellen Port of St. Louis in a scheduled 18-hole final for the U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur championship at Wellesley (Mass.) Country Club.

Kraus, 55, had seen a 2-up lead vanish in the middle of her semifinal when defending champion Karen Garcia of Cool, Calif., rallied to win three holes and go ahead. Kraus squared the match with a par at the 17th and won it with a par at the 19th.

Earlier, she had recovered from 2-down through11with wins at14 and15 to get even with medalist Judith Kyrinis of Canada, and the two would go on to halve five successive holes with pars before Kraus won with a par at the 21st hole.

“My putting left me a little bit early in the match, so I fell behind,” Kraus said. “But I have confidence in my game so I was able to come back. … I’m really delighted. It’s the first time in the match I went up. It only took, what, 21 holes?”

Asked about making an 8-foot comebacker for par to claim the win, Kraus said: “I was kicking myself a little bit after the first putt, but now I’m not.”

In another quarterfinal, Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville challenged Port all morning but could get only within one hole, as Port won, 2 and 1.

Port, who turned 55 Wednesday and is seeking her third U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur title and seventh USGA championship, outlasted Laura Coble of Augusta, Ga., in 19 holes in the semifinals.

Port pulled even with Coble with a birdie win on the par-3 15th, halved the par-4 16th and par-5 17th and 18th with pars and won with a par on the par-419th.

Sughrue advances: Matt Sughrue, a Bethesda Country Club member from Arlington, Va., rallied in the stretch to win two matches and gain the final of the U.S. Senior Amateur championship at Old Warson CC in St. Louis.

Sughrue, 57, won the 18th hole with a par to force overtime, then won the 19th with a par to defeat Kevin Cahill of Waukesha, Wis., in a semifinal.

In a morning quarterfinal, he won 15 and 16 to get even with Doug Hanzel, Savannah, Ga., then made a 5-foot par putt to halve 18 and secure the victory, 1-up.

He will play Dave Ryan, 62, of Taylorville, Ill., in a scheduled 18-hole match this morning.

Ryan beat Michael Dunsmore of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., 5 and 3, in the quarterfinals and topped Tim Jackson of Germantown, Tenn., 1 up in the semifinals

Sughrue left the insurance business after 25 years to go to graduate school at Virginia Tech and become a psychotherapist.
