Gunman who dressed as woman guilty of murder
A Baltimore jury has convicted a 22-yearold man for a killing in which authorities say he disguised himself as a woman and fatally shot a man in the street, the state’s attorney’s office announced. Steven Bass, 33, was fatally shot June12, 2015, in the 2200 block of N. Fulton Ave. Surveillance camera footage showed a person wearing a woman’s dark-colored summer hat, multicolored blouse and light-blue pants, with a purse slung over the right shoulder. After witness to the shooting told police that the gunman had touched the hood of a vehicle, police lifted a fingerprint from the car and matched it to Brandon Payton, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said a jury convicted Payton on Friday of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence. He faces life plus 20 years in prison at his sentencing on Dec. 5, they said. In a statement, State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby praised the witness for coming forward. “Witness cooperation is crucial to guaranteeing that these criminals who wreak havoc on our streets are held accountable,” Mosby said.
