Marlins: A friend of one of the men who died in a boating accident with Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez raised concerns in text messages before the fatal late-night trip. Will Bernal said he sent several texts to 25-yearold Eduardo Rivero after midnight Sunday, urging him not to go out on the water. The texts, which Bernal posted on social media, asked Rivero to turn on his “find iPhone” application and try to get Fernandez to keep the boat close to shore. ... The Marlins announced a public viewing for Fernandez will be held Wednesday at a Miami church, preceded by a funeral procession outside the ballpark. A private funeral will be held Thursday for Fernandez’s family as well as Marlins players and personnel.
Royals: RHP Dillon Gee has two blood clots and will not pitch again this season for the Royals. Gee was the winning pitcher Sunday at Detroit but was hospitalized after the game. Gee, who was shut down in July 2012 with a blood clot in his right shoulder that required surgery, has a clot in one of his lungs and a shoulder.
Mets: LHP Steven Matz will undergo surgery next week to remove bone spurs in his pitching elbow and miss the rest of the season. Matz has not pitched since Aug. 14 because of tightness in his shoulder. He finished the season at 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA in 22 starts. ... Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow recorded a pair of hits, scored a run and made a sliding catch to conclude his final intrasquad game in the Mets’ instructional league. Tebow, who is scheduled to play his first game on Wednesday, singled in his final two at-bats in Tuesday’s simulated game.
Blue Jays: Reliever Joaquin Benoit will miss the remainder of the regular season after tearing his left calf muscle when he tripped and fell while running in from the bullpen the second time benches cleared during Monday’s 7-5 loss to the Yankees. Benoit expects to be out at least two to three weeks.
