Charlie Darby, Gilman, boys volleyball
The senior outside hitter had 45 kills, 27 digs and five aces to lead the Greyhounds to victory in two five-set matches last week. In a rematch of last year’s Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championship won by Loyola Blakefield, Darby had 26 kills on 34 attacks with just three errors for an exceptional .676 hitting percentage. His 26 kills came within one of the school record. Against St. Paul’s, Darby, 6 feet 2, had19 kills, 14 digs, three aces and three blocks as he rallied the team from an 0-2 start. He averages 15.4 kills per match as Gilman tops the MIAA at 10-0. An “A” student who is president of the Athletics Association at Gilman, he also plays baseball and basketball for the Greyhounds. Darby plans to play baseball in college.
