St. Mary’s shuts out Maryvale, 2-0
Bel Air tops John Carroll, 4-3, in OT; Annapolis and Severn tie in field hockey
Coming off consecutive Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference championships, St. Mary’s has reestablished itself as a girls soccer force. But with several talented new teams in the B conference, a new coach and a transformed approach, the regular season has been a work in progress.
Sarah DeWitt, Chloe Byrne and a cohesive defensive unit are proving that, with two weeks to go in the regular season, the Saints are ready for a playoff push.
DeWitt and Byrne scored roughly three minutes apart midway through the first half, while Grace Moore led a back line that absorbed Maryvale’s offensive attack as St. Mary’s shut out the visiting Lions, 2-0.
“Everybody needs to be part of the goals that we score,” St. Mary’s coach Sarah Molina said. “We had a lot of opportunities to put the ball away, but I am good with two goals and I am good with the shutout.”
Although St. Mary’s (7-5-1) controlled the ball almost from the outset, the Saints were unable to put a shot on goal until DeWitt’s tally 13 minutes in. A failed clear by Maryvale (4-8-2) deflected to DeWitt, the Saints’ leading scorer. She finished into the far left corner, past the outstretched arms of Lions goalkeeper Delaney Page (eight saves). Byrne, a returning All-Conference performer, added to the lead less than three minutes later.
NO. 5 BEL AIR 4, JOHN CARROLL 3, OT: Lexi Kraemer had a hat trick to lift the host Bobcats (7-3-1) over the visiting Patriots (2-7). St. Mary’s Hailee Murphy, left, chases after Maryvale’s Maria Aiello. Sarah DeWitt and Chloe Byrne scored for the Saints in their 2-0 win over the visiting Lions.
John Carroll goalie Ellie Marts made a game-high 22 saves.
GLENELG COUNTRY 2, SETON KEOUGH 2, 2OT: Alisha Netus and Lindsey Marshall each scored for the visiting Dragons (4-3-1, 4-3-1 IAAM B Conference), who played to a draw with the Gators (2-5-1, 2-4-1).
SEVERN 3, ANNAPOLIS AREA CHRISTIAN 2: Jack McCarthy scored the winner with two minutes left as the Admirals (12-3, 9-1 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference) beat the host Eagles (3-8, 3-8).
Kyle Carey scored twice for Annapolis Area Christian.
NO. 2 MCDONOGH 3, ST. MARY’S 0: Maddie Gutkowski made nine saves, but the visiting Saints (3-5-1, 2-5-1) fell to the Eagles (9-2, 6-2).
NO. 13 JOHN CARROLL 5, GLENELG COUNTRY 2: Ellie Bruggeman scored four goals to power the visiting Patriots (8-2, 3-1 IAAM B Conference) past the Dragons (3-3, 2-3).
ANNAPOLIS 1, SEVERN 1, OT: Sophie Oliver gave the host Admirals (4-5-1) a 1-0 lead in the first half before Ellie Jenkins scored the equalizer for the Panthers (5-3-1) in the second half.
KENT ISLAND 2, MOUNT DE SALES 0: Sydney Holzer and Emily Keller scored in the first half, and the Buccaneers (8-1) held on to defeat host Sailors (10-4).
Kent Island defender Madi Hartnett preserved the lead in the second half by pushing away shots by Giana Antone and Sam Dinoto from the end line.
