Mary­land Mil­lion 5K race Satur­day at Lau­rel Park

The sec­ond an­nual Mary­land Mil­lion 5K road race will take place Satur­day at Lau­rel Park, one week be­fore the 31st run­ning of the race­track’s Jim McKay Mary­land Mil­lion Day pro­gram. The 3.1-mile event kicks off at 8:30 a.m., fol­lowed by a 1-mile fun run at 8:45. Reg­is­tra­tion fees and funds raised by par­tic­i­pants will go to ben­e­fit race or­ga­nizer Spe­cial Olympics Mary­land. Par­tic­i­pants will be­gin by run­ning through Lau­rel Park’s start­ing gate and con­tinue in a loop around Lau­rel Race Track Road be­fore fin­ish­ing down the home­stretch of the main track in front of the grand­stand. Pos­trace re­fresh­ments will be served and an awards cer­e­mony held in the win­ner’s cir­cle at 9:45 a.m. Reg­is­tra­tion be­gins at 7:30 a.m. near the Billy Bar­ton statue in front of the grand­stand. The cost is $30 for pre­reg­is­trants and $35 on race day. Par­tic­i­pants who raise a min­i­mum of $30 are not re­quired to pay a reg­is­tra­tion fee. MEN’S COL­LEGE SOC­CER: An­drew Hop­kins scored the win­ning goal in the 65th to give Navy (3-6-3) a 2-1 win over vis­it­ing Long­wood (4-7-1) on Tues­day in a non­con­fer­ence match. Brock Dud­ley opened the scor­ing for the Mid­ship­men in the 37th minute with his first ca­reer goal. … Gabriel Carls­son took 18 sec­onds to an­swer host St. John’s sec­ond-half free-kick goal, and Loy­ola Mary­land (5-5-2) played the Red Storm (5-3-4) to a 1-1 tie in the non­con­fer­ence fi­nale for both teams Tues­day. Carls­son’s goal tied the NCAA’s 15thfastest re­sponse to an op­pos­ing tally. WOMEN’S COL­LEGE SOC­CER: Two first-half goals helped Navy (6-8-2, 2-2-1 Pa­triot League) se­cure a 2-1 win over host Howard (8-4-2, 5-0-1 South­west­ern Ath­letic Con­fer­ence) on Tues­day. COL­LEGE FIELD HOCKEY: Steven­son (3-8) de­feated host Mc­Daniel, 3-1, in non­con­fer­ence ac­tion Tues­day. Sarah Bach (Manch­ester Val­ley) had the lone goal for the Green Ter­ror (3-9). WOMEN’S COL­LEGE VOL­LEY­BALL: Tow­son hit 11 ser­vice aces in a 3-0 vic­tory over Delaware State (0-19) on Tues­day. The host Tigers (16-5) ended a two-match los­ing streak. … Mor­gan State swept Delaware State at Tow­son ear­lier Tues­day. The Bears im­proved to 3-16 over­all and 3-2 in the MidEastern Ath­letic Con­fer­ence, while the Hor­nets fell to 0-5 in league play. MEN’S COL­LEGE LACROSSE: Mike Pop­ple­ton (Johns Hop­kins) was named a Drexel vol­un­teer as­sis­tant. The Ch­e­sa­peake Bay­hawks face­off spe­cial­ist was a sec­ond-team All-Amer­i­can in 2013. IRON­MAN TRIATHLON: Cock­eysville na­tive Billy Busko fin­ished 35th in his age group in the Iron­man Triathlon World Cham­pi­onship in Kona, Hawaii, on Satur­day. Busko, 52, was the sev­enth-fastest Amer­i­can among the 205 men ages 50 to 54, fin­ish­ing in 10 hours, 25 min­utes, 44 sec­onds. The Du­laney grad­u­ate qual­i­fied by fin­ish­ing third in his age group in the Iron­man Coeur d’Alene in Idaho on Aug. 21. —
