Surgery will end Decker’s season
The Jets’ struggling offense will be without one of its biggest playmakers for the rest of the season.
Wide receiver Eric Decker was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a partially torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder and will have season-ending surgery.
Decker was inactive the last two weeks after initially being injured against the Bills in Week 2 and the shoulder worsening against the Chiefs the following week.
Decker had nine catches for 194 yards and two touchdowns i n three games. He had 80 receptions for 1,027 yards and 12 scores — including a teamrecord 10 scoring grabs inside the opponents’ 20yard line — last season. Kaep’s new deal: 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick signed a restructured deal that eliminates injury guarantees, NFL Network reported.
The reworked contract gives Kaepernick the option to void the deal after the 2016 season and eliminates roughly $14.5 million in injury guarantees for 2017. The deal also dissolves the final three years of a six-year contract that previously kept him under contract through 2020. Newton back at practice: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton returned to practice, but it remains unclear if he will play Sunday against the Saints.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Newton remains in the league’s concussion protocol and the team is waiting “with bated breath” to find out how Newton responds when he reports to work following his first day of practice in nearly two weeks. Reed in protocol: Redskins tight end Jordan Reed is being evaluated for a concussion, an injury that puts his status for Sunday’s game against the Eagles in doubt.
Reed has a history of concussions, but coach Jay Gruden said he didn’t want to speculate on what the impact of another concussion would mean until test results come back.
“He just had some symptoms, it doesn’t mean it is” a concussion, Gruden said. “We just want to make sure we take the right steps.” Extra points: The Chargers will be without CB Brandon Flowers (concussion) and S Jahleel Addae (collarbone) for their Thursday night game against the Broncos. … ExBaylor coach Art Briles is working as a guest coach with the Browns. Coach Hue Jackson said Briles will be around for an unspecified period of time. … Packers RB Eddie Lacy missed practice and it’s unclear if he’ll be ready to play Sunday against the Cowboys, coach Mike McCarthy said.
