Guerrero’s hat trick leads Gaels to victory
Mount Saint Joseph boys soccer now atop MIAA ‘A’ with No. 2 Calvert Hall
Mount Saint Joseph junior Diego Guerrero scored three goals to lead the topranked Gaels to a 4-2 comeback win over visiting Archbishop Spalding on Wednesday in boys soccer.
The win moved Mount Saint Joseph (11-1-1, 9-1-1) into a tie with No. 2 Calvert Hall (11-2-2, 9-2-1) in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference, with 28 points each.
The Cavaliers (2-11-1, 1-9-1) led 2-1 after a pair of goals 142 seconds apart by senior Peter Roberts. His twin brother, Zach, started each score with a free kick.
Guerrero converted a penalty kick to tie the game at 2 with 7:03 left in the first half. His second-half goals came off assists from Brett St. Martin and Tyler Collins. It was Guerrero’s first hat trick. “It felt really good,” he said. “In one game, it’s not something I get every day, so I appreciate myteammateshelpingmescore.”
Added Gaels coach Mike St. Martin: “He’s technically a very good player and he’s strong on the ball.”
St. Martin scored the Gaels’ first goal after a corner kick from Ian Reger.
Spalding remains tied with St. Paul’s (1-10-1, 1-10-1) for last in the conference.
The Cavaliers didn’t look like a cellar dweller when the Roberts twins created trouble for a Gaels defense that had won its previous seven league games by a combined 12-2 margin.
Spalding coach Nick Hondrum liked the way his team hung in the game but knows they still have work to do to beat upperechelon opponents.
“When we play confident, I think we can play with anybody, and today we showed confidence from time to time, but it’s going to take practice to get consistent with that,” Hondrum said.
MARYVALE 3, ANNAPOLIS AREA CHRISTIAN 0: Lilly Shaffer, Willow Oh and Lizzie de Guzman scored to lead the Lions (6-1-1, 4-0 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference) past the host Eagles (7-3, 2-3).
