Sym­po­sium set on black women in sports

Mor­gan State’s School of Global Jour­nal­ism and Com­mu­ni­ca­tion and ESPN’s The Un­de­feated will co-spon­sor a sym­po­sium about black women in sports Tues­day at 11 a.m. in the Stu­dent Cen­ter The­ater. Pan­elists will in­clude Olympic bronzemedal fencer Ibti­haj Muham­mad and Un­de­feated se­nior writer Lon­nae O’Neal. ESPN’s Jemele Hill will be the mod­er­a­tor. The sym­po­sium will in­tro­duce the Cen­ter for the Study of Race in Sports and Cul­ture, a research and re­port­ing pro­gram that will ex­am­ine the role of African-Amer­i­cans in sports and cul­ture, and train stu­dents for ca­reers in sports jour­nal­ism. LAU­REL PARK: Four de­fend­ing cham­pi­ons are among the 185 nom­i­nees to nine stakes on the 31st an­nual Jim McKay Mary­land Mil­lion Day pro­gram Oct. 22. Eleven races will be run, in­clud­ing four on the turf. En­tries close and post po­si­tions will be drawn Wed­nes­day. Lead­ing the nom­i­na­tions are mul­ti­ple Mary­land Mil­lion win­ners Ben’s Cat, en­tered in the $100,000 Sprint and $125,000 Turf, and Mon­ster Sleep­ing, in the $125,000 Mary­land Mil­lion Ladies. Mon­ster Sleep­ing is a re­turn­ing de­fend­ing cham­pion, as are Ad­mi­rals War Chest in the $150,000 Clas­sic, Ph­lash Phelps in the Turf and Stolen Love in the $50,000 Starter Hand­i­cap. COL­LEGE FOOTBALL: Tick­ets are on sale for the Mil­i­tary Bowl. The game again will match rep­re­sen­ta­tives from the At­lantic Coast Con­fer­ence and the Amer­i­can Ath­letic Con­fer­ence. Kick­off is set for 3:30 p.m. Dec. 27 at Navy-Ma­rine Corps Me­mo­rial Sta­dium. The game will be tele­vised on ESPN.
