Ex-Terp Mullins helps D.C. United clinch 3rd straight play­off berth

Pa­trick Mullins (Maryland) had a goal and an as­sist and D.C. United clinched a third con­sec­u­tive MLS Cup play­off ap­pear­ance with a 3-1 vic­tory over New York City FC. Bobby Boswell and Rob Vin­cent added goals to help United (11-9-13) win its fourth straight. City (14-10-9) was elim­i­nated from the Sup­port­ers’ Shield race and fell three points be­hind the New York Red Bulls for the top seed in the East. United opened the scor­ing in the 27th minute when Lloyd Sam sent in a low cross and Lu­ciano Acosta de­flected it through to Mullins for the fin­ish. Boswell headed home Sam’s cor­ner in the 31st and Vin­cent cap­i­tal­ized on a de­fen­sive mis­cue in the 45th. David Villa scored for NYCFC on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute — his 22nd of the sea­son. NBA: All-Star cen­ter DeMar­cus Cousins scored 22 points and had five re­bounds and six as­sists as the host Sacra­mento Kings (3-2) beat the Washington Wizards (2-3), 124-119, in a pre­sea­son game on Satur­day night. Point guard Dar­ren Col­li­son fin­ished with 22 points on 7-for-11 shoot­ing and added eight as­sists for the Kings. Seven Wizards play­ers scored in dou­ble fig­ures, led by An­drew Ni­chol­son’s 19 points. Trey Burke added 14 points and 10 as­sists for Washington.
