Trumbo wins Sport­ing News come­back award

The best sea­son of Mark Trumbo’s ma­jor league ca­reer net­ted the Ori­oles out­fielder the Sport­ing News Amer­i­can League Come­back Player of the Year, the pub­li­ca­tion an­nounced Tues­day. Trumbo, who was ac­quired last off­sea­son from the Seat­tle Mariners for backup catcher Steve Cle­venger (Mount Saint Joseph), led the ma­jors with a ca­reer­high 47 home runs. A pend­ing free agent, Trumbo was se­lected in a vote of 174 AL play­ers, edg­ing Texas Rangers out­fielder Ian Des­mond, 40 votes to 39. Ori­oles right-han­der Chris Till­man (four), who had a team-high 16 wins, placed sev­enth. Trumbo is the third Ori­ole to re­ceive the award, which has been given out by Sport­ing News an­nu­ally since 1965. The first two were first base­man Boog Pow­ell in 1966 and right-han­der Rick Sut­cliffe in 1992.
