Trumbo wins Sporting News comeback award
The best season of Mark Trumbo’s major league career netted the Orioles outfielder the Sporting News American League Comeback Player of the Year, the publication announced Tuesday. Trumbo, who was acquired last offseason from the Seattle Mariners for backup catcher Steve Clevenger (Mount Saint Joseph), led the majors with a careerhigh 47 home runs. A pending free agent, Trumbo was selected in a vote of 174 AL players, edging Texas Rangers outfielder Ian Desmond, 40 votes to 39. Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman (four), who had a team-high 16 wins, placed seventh. Trumbo is the third Oriole to receive the award, which has been given out by Sporting News annually since 1965. The first two were first baseman Boog Powell in 1966 and right-hander Rick Sutcliffe in 1992.
