Terps women’s bas­ket­ball ranked No. 5 in coaches poll

The Mary­land women’s bas­ket­ball team was voted No. 5 in the USA To­day pre­sea­son coaches poll, re­leased Thurs­day. Four-time de­fend­ing na­tional cham­pion Con­necti­cut is atop the rank­ings again de­spite los­ing All-Amer­i­cans Bre­anna Ste­wart, Mor­gan Tuck and Mo­riah Jef­fer­son to grad­u­a­tion. The Terps were the only top-five team not to re­ceive a first-place vote. The Huskies were No. 1 on 18 of the 32 bal­lots. No. 2 Notre Dame (eight), No. 3 South Carolina (three), No. 4 Bay­lor (two) and No. 6 Texas (one) also got No. 1 votes. Mary­land’s clos­est com­pe­ti­tion in the Big Ten Con­fer­ence, Ohio State, tied for No. 6. The As­so­ci­ated Press pre­sea­son rank­ings are ex­pected to be re­leased next week. COL­LEGE FOOT­BALL: Navy se­nior Will Worth was named Man­ning Award Quar­ter­back of the Week. MEN’S COL­LEGE SOC­CER: Host Navy (4-8-4, 0-5-2 Pa­triot League) and first-place Amer­i­can (8-5-4, 5-1-1) played to a 0-0 dou­ble-over­time draw on Wed­nes­day night. WOMEN’S COL­LEGE VOL­LEY­BALL: Sopho­more out­side hit­ter Liz Twil­ley had 13 kills as host Mary­land (10-13, 2-9 Big Ten) earned a 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 28-30, 25-19, 15-12) up­set of No. 19 Ohio State (14-9, 4-7) on Wed­nes­day night. MA­JOR LEAGUE SOC­CER: Mat­teo Man­cosu scored twice and the Mon­treal Im­pact beat host D.C. United, 4-2, in an MLS Cup Play­offs knock­out match. Laurent Ci­man and Ig­na­cio Pi­atti also scored for the fifth-seeded Im­pact, which will host the top-seeded New York Red Bulls on Sun­day in the first game of the two-leg Eastern Con­fer­ence semi­fi­nals. La­mar Nea­gle and Tay­lor Kemp (Mary­land) scored for fourth-seeded United, both after the 89th minute. HORSE RAC­ING: Dol­phus Mor­ri­son, a long­time horse­man and the breeder of 2009 Preak­ness win­ner Rachel Alexan­dra, died Wed­nes­day in Columbia, Mo. Mor­ri­son, who was 82, had Alzheimer’s dis­ease, his wife, Ellen, said. —
