The work­horse run­ning back scored three touch­downs as the Glad­i­a­tors up­set pre­vi­ously un­de­feated and then-No. 5 Howard, 25-20, Fri­day night to win the El­gard Tro­phy, awarded an­nu­ally to the win­ner of the ri­valry game. Asopho­more who­movedupto var­sity at the end of last sea­son, Owens car­ried the ball 38 times for 203 yards as the Glad­i­a­tors (7-2) ended the Lions’ 32-game Howard County win­ning streak. For the sea­son, Owens has 241 car­ries for 1,725 yards and 20 touch­downs. He av­er­ages 7.2 yards per carry and192 yards rush­ing per game. Last Novem­ber, he had 215 yards on 29 car­ries for three touch­downs in his var­sity de­but, a 41-13 play­off win over Ch­e­sa­peake-AA. Owens, who has a 4.3 weighted GPA, also plays bas­ket­ball and runs track for the Glad­i­a­tors.
