The workhorse running back scored three touchdowns as the Gladiators upset previously undefeated and then-No. 5 Howard, 25-20, Friday night to win the Elgard Trophy, awarded annually to the winner of the rivalry game. Asophomore whomovedupto varsity at the end of last season, Owens carried the ball 38 times for 203 yards as the Gladiators (7-2) ended the Lions’ 32-game Howard County winning streak. For the season, Owens has 241 carries for 1,725 yards and 20 touchdowns. He averages 7.2 yards per carry and192 yards rushing per game. Last November, he had 215 yards on 29 carries for three touchdowns in his varsity debut, a 41-13 playoff win over Chesapeake-AA. Owens, who has a 4.3 weighted GPA, also plays basketball and runs track for the Gladiators.
