The All-Metro senior hitter closed out her four-year career on the highest of notes, leading the Blazers (11-8) to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship Saturday. In a four-game upset win over top seed St. Paul’s, Newell had18 kills, 22 digs, four aces and three blocks. With the 20-25, 25-11, 25-23, 25-13 victory, Notre Dame Prep, seeded third, handed the Crusaders their first league loss of the season. In reaching the championship match, the Blazers swept John Carroll on Nov. 1 and second-seeded Archbishop Spalding on Thursday. Newell had 10 kills, five digs and eight aces against the Patriots and 14 kills, 10 digs, two aces and a block against the Cavaliers. Despite missing four games with an injury this season, Newell finished with a team-high 163 kills, 153 digs and 50 aces. She has committed to play at Gettysburg.
