Terps fall to North Car­olina, 3-0, in NCAA quar­ter­fi­nals

The sec­ond-seeded Mary­land field hockey team fell to vis­it­ing North Car­olina, 3-0, in the NCAA quar­ter­fi­nals. The un­seeded Tar Heels (19-5) took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Ash­ley Hoff­man scored off the first penalty cor­ner for ei­ther team. Two min­utes into the sec­ond half, Hoff­man scored again for North Car­olina to make it a twogoal lead with just over 32 min­utes left. Mary­land (18-5) pulled goal­keeper Sarah Bates with 6:42 to play in fa­vor of an ex­tra at­tacker, and a lit­tle over a minute later, the Tar Heels’ Lau­ren Moyer got be­hind the Terps de­fense and scored into the empty net. Mary­land took eight shots to North Car­olina’s 11 and had five penalty cor­ners to four. Sopho­more goal­keeper Sarah Hol­l­i­day made two saves in 41 min­utes and Bates also made two in 28 min­utes. MORE: Fresh­man Arielle John­ston scored to lead Sal­is­bury (18-1) to a 1-0 vic­tory over vis­it­ing Ursi­nus (17-4) in the third round of the NCAA Divi­sion III tour­na­ment to ad­vance to the semi­fi­nals in Geneva, N.Y., the Sea Gulls’ third trip in four years. The game was score­less through the first half, but in the 45th minute, ju­nior Natalie Wilkin­son in­serted the ball off one of Sal­is­bury’s 14 penalty cor­ners and John­ston col­lected the pass and fired the ball past Ursi­nus goal­keeper
