Laurel man enters Alford plea in murder of wife
A Laurel man faces up to 30 years in prison after reaching a plea deal Monday in the October 2015 murder of his wife. Jason W. Martin entered an Alford plea to the second-degree murder of Carla Dee Martin, 42, according to Wayne Kirwan of the Howard County state’s attorney’s office. In an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit to guilt but concedes the state has enough evidence to convict him. Police were called to the couple’s home Oct. 25, Kirwan said, after neighbors reported Jason Martin coming to their door covered in blood. Martin told his neighbor that he was fighting with his wife and hit her with a dumbbell, Assistant State’s Attorney Devora Kirschner told the court. Howard County Circuit Judge Richard S. Bernhardt scheduled Martin’s sentencing hearing for March 13-16, Kirwan said.
