23-2 first-half spurt carries Towson men
Navy women defeat Nevada, 79-62
Mike Morsell scored 21points and host Towson used a 23-2 first-half run to pull away from Stony Brook, 88-63, in men’s basketball Friday in the Barclays Center Classic.
Brian Starr’s jumper gave Towson a 27-26 lead and sparked the big run, and the Tigers led 50-28 at halftime after holding the Seawolves scoreless for nearly 10 minutes. Morsell scored 17 points in the half, Deshaun Morman had 11 points and the Tigers shot 66.7 percent from the field (18-for-27) to the Seawolves’ 28.6 percent (8-for-28).
Stony Brook finished shooting 30.5 percent from the field.
Morman finished with 18 points for Towson (3-2). John Davis scored 13 and had 10 rebounds, Alex Thomas scored 12 points, and Arnaud William Adala Moto had 10.
Tyrell Sturdivant and Akwasi Yeboah scored 10 apiece for the Seawolves (0-4).
GRAND CANYON 70, COPPIN STATE 37: DeWayne Russell had 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting and the host Antelopes (2-2) held the Eagles (0-7) to 14 first-half points.
Grand Canyon opened the game on a 15-2 run and led by double digits the rest of the way. Coppin State shot 4-for-26 from the field in the first half, including 2-for-11 from 3-point range.
NAVY 79, NEVADA 62: Sarita Condie scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Mids (3-2) past the host Wolf Pack (3-2) at the Nugget Classic.
Navy used a 12-5 run and seven turnovers to establish an early lead. The Mids led by as many as 17 points on layups three times. Kaila Clark (Archbishop Spalding) made a layup for a 33-16 lead with 5:54 left in the first half. Justice Swett made a layup for a 73-56 lead with 2:56 left in the game. And Ashanti Kennedy made a layup with 24 seconds left in the game for the final score. Navy faces Arkansas, a 91-61 winner over Memphis, in tonight’s championship at 7:30.
EASTERN KENTUCKY 66, MORGAN STATE 58: The Colonels (2-2) led the entire game and held off a second-half rally by the Bears (1-3) at the MissouriKansas City tournament.
Braennan Farrar finished with 15 points for Morgan State, which faces the host Kangaroos (1-3) today at 4:30 p.m.
STEPHENF. AUSTIN72, COPPINSTATE57: Genesis Lucas scored a season-high 14 points, but the host Eagles (0-5) fell to the Ladyjacks (3-2).
