Today’s state games

Baltimore Sun - - COLLEGE FOOTBALL -

When: Today, noon Where: Maryland Stadium, College Park Audio: 105.7 FM, 980 AM; also available on TuneIn TV: ESPNews Series: Maryland leads 6-5 What’s at stake: Though there has been some speculation that the Terps can still get a bowl bid with only five wins, Maryland can end any doubt by beating the Scarlet Knights. Given how crazy the two games have been since both teams joined the Big Ten, nothing is guaranteed. Also, finishing with a .500 record in the regular season in DJ Durkin’s first season seems a whole lot better than finishing two games below. Key matchup: It’s hard to focus on one, given how poorly the teams have been of late. But Maryland’s success this season has revolved around its running game, which has been almost nonexistent the past three weeks. If the Terps can get sophomore Ty Johnson going, with help from Wes Brown and Kenneth Goins Jr., the absence of suspended freshman Lorenzo Harrison won’t seem as significant. The Scarlet Knights rank at the bottom of the Big Ten in rushing defense. Player to watch: From Maryland’s perspective, it has to be whoever plays quarterback. If it’s fifth-year senior Perry Hills, who sat out last week’s loss at Nebraska after getting forced out of the previous two games with injuries to his right (Michigan) and left (Ohio State) shoulders, it’s a matter of how long he can stay in the game and how effective he will be running and passing. If it’s either of the true freshmen, Max Bortenschlager or Tyrrell Pigrome, it’s seeing whether they can give the Terps production. — Don Markus
