Naval Academy stu­dent dies of leukemia

A mid­ship­man at the Naval Academy died of leukemia Sun­day, the academy has an­nounced. Ja­son Jablon­ski, 21, of Or­chard Park, N.Y., died at Wal­ter Reed Na­tional Mil­i­tary Med­i­cal Cen­ter, Naval Academy of­fi­cials said Mon­day. He was di­ag­nosed with leukemia in Au­gust and had been treated at the med­i­cal cen­ter since then. “His con­di­tion de­te­ri­o­rated sig­nif­i­cantly over the Thanks­giv­ing hol­i­day week­end and his im­mune sys­tem sur­ren­dered to an in­fec­tion,” Naval Academy of­fi­cials said in a state­ment. “He was sur­rounded by his fam­ily and fel­low mid­ship­men when he died.” Jablon­ski, a mid­ship­man first class, or se­nior, was a mem­ber of the Navy ice hockey team and was a mem­ber of the 13th Com­pany at the Naval Academy. An eco­nomics ma­jor, he earned aca­demic hon­ors each se­mes­ter at the academy and was pre­vi­ously a pla­toon sergeant and a squad leader. The Naval Academy is of­fer­ing grief coun­sel­ing ser­vices for mid­ship­men, fac­ulty and staff. Fu­neral ar­range­ments are in­com­plete.
