Naval Academy student dies of leukemia
A midshipman at the Naval Academy died of leukemia Sunday, the academy has announced. Jason Jablonski, 21, of Orchard Park, N.Y., died at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Naval Academy officials said Monday. He was diagnosed with leukemia in August and had been treated at the medical center since then. “His condition deteriorated significantly over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and his immune system surrendered to an infection,” Naval Academy officials said in a statement. “He was surrounded by his family and fellow midshipmen when he died.” Jablonski, a midshipman first class, or senior, was a member of the Navy ice hockey team and was a member of the 13th Company at the Naval Academy. An economics major, he earned academic honors each semester at the academy and was previously a platoon sergeant and a squad leader. The Naval Academy is offering grief counseling services for midshipmen, faculty and staff. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
