U.S. picks 2 possible routes for Baltimore-D.C. maglev

- — Associated Press

A federal review has narrowed the possible routes for a proposed high-speed, magnetic levitation train linking Baltimore and Washington down to two, both more or less following the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. The proposal calls for using maglev technology on a 40-mile, $10 billion line on which trains could reach 375 mph, reducing the trip between the two cities to 15 minutes. Some communities along the proposed paths are opposed. Northeast Maglev, the company behind the proposal, hopes a route can be chosen and tunneling could begin in 2020. Operations could begin in 2027. The Central Japan Railway Company has offered to share the costs and its magnetic levitation technology.
