Brigade QB Hip­peard earns weekly of­fen­sive honor

Brigade quar­ter­back Randy Hip­peard was named the Arena Foot­ball League’s Of­fen­sive Player of the Week for his per­for­mance against the Albany Empire on Satur­day. Hip­peard threw for 270 yards and eight touch­downs in a 59-56 win that gave Bal­ti­more sole pos­ses­sion of first place in the AFL stand­ings. Hip­peard’s eight touch­downs are a sea­son high for the 2017 league Most Valu­able Player and set an all-time Brigade sin­gle-game record. Hip­peard led a con­sis­tent Brigade at­tack, throw­ing four touch­downs in each half and scor­ing on nine of 11 of the team’s of­fen­sive drives. The seven-year AFLvet­eran threw six of his eight touch­downs to wide­outs Brandon Thomp­kins and Quentin Sims, who each caught three. The Brigade re­turn to ac­tion Fri­day at 7 p.m., tak­ing on the Wash­ing­ton Valor at Royal Farms Arena. The game will be broad­cast live on CBS Sports Net­work. Bal­ti­more is 2-0 against Wash­ing­ton this sea­son. ROSTERADDITION: The Brigade signed AFL Hall of Fame de­fen­sive back Cl­e­van Thomas on Wed­nes­day. The 11-year AFL vet­eran last played for the LA KISS in 2016. Thomas has been on four AFL cham­pi­onship teams and won the league’s De­fen­sive Player of the Year award three times. The Florida State alum­nus ranks ranks sec­ond all-time in the AFL in in­ter­cep­tions (81), is third in pass breakups (161) and is tied for ninth in to­tal tack­les (538).
