After reading Joseph Reichert’s letter, I found it cringe-worthy and really of little help to Brendan Kelly. It was laced with racist remarks, including “mostly Muslim Arabs attend SIU,” and seemed to denigrate Navy enlisted sailors and maybe even Marines, as a veiled slight towards Mike Bost’s service as an enlisted Marine. As a prior enlisted airman, who was later commissioned, I’m proud of my enlisted time. My promotions up to lieutenant colonel were due to the support I had from countless airmen and non-commissioned officers. Reichert then touted Notre Dame as “the best university in the country.” I’m sure Harvard, Yale and even Purdue University grads will find that silly. As for coal, much of it is exported to China, including coal from Illinois. With supporters like that, who needs political enemies? By the time this letter is published, the election results will be in. Then I guess we’ll know the sentiments of 12th District voters. – Phil Henning, Smithton
