3 WORK IN SOME WALLPAPER

Instead of traditional tile, Crystal went with wallpaper, right, for subtle texture. Keep the paper a safe distance from burners as she did by installing a slab of quartzsurfacing on the range wall, below right.

4 ADD SMART BUILT-INS

Floor-to-ceiling cabinets, below, provided enough storage that she could hang floating shelves over wallpaper instead of upper cabinets. Electrical outlets in the pull-out coffee station manage cords. A strip of plugs under the counter, right, eliminates the need for outlets on

the wall.

5 USE NATURAL ACCENTS

Wood keeps shiny metallics and glossy surfaces from looking too sleek and cold. A naturaledge wood bar in the adjacent breakfast room, left, and cypress ceiling beams warm the space.
