An ex­ten­sive amount of re­search shows that this diet, rich in healthy fats, fish, and veg­eta­bles, is di­rectly as­so­ci­ated with a re­duced risk of many ail­ments, in­clud­ing heart dis­ease, de­men­tia, and de­pres­sion. A re­cent study pub­lished in the Jour­nal of Ex­per­i­men­tal Geron­tol­ogy discovered that “greater ad­her­ence to the Mediter­ranean diet and daily tea drink­ing seem to have a ben­e­fi­cial ef­fect on de­pres­sive symp­toms in older adults.” To give it a try:

Eat pri­mar­ily plant- based foods such as fruits and veg­eta­bles, whole grains, legumes, and nuts.

Driz­zle olive oil over each dish.

Eat fish and poul­try at least twice a week.

Limit red meat to no more than a few times a month.

Use more herbs and spices to fla­vor foods in­stead of salt.
