Birds & Blooms - - Top 10 -

ERYNGIUM YUCCIFOLIUM, ZONES 4 TO 9

Ominously named, this plant is known for its 1-inch, orb-shaped clusters of many small flowers. Whitish bracts stick out sharply from the flowers, giving the head a rough, prickly look and feel. This warmseason perennial grows best in dry prairie soil.

Why we love it: The heads give off a honeylike odor when in bloom from June to September.

Host to: rattlesnake master borer moth

9 Viceroy butterfly
