SLIPPERY STEPS

- —K.F.

The companionway steps shown provide belowdecks access on a top-of-the-line cruiser. The steps feature a beautiful finish and architectural grace. The riser—the height between steps—measures 7 inches, which means most people can use the steps without watching their feet; it’s the normal step proportion, so it’s not a insignificant safety consideration.

For all of these good attributes, these steps proved dangerous because we found them slipperier than a fresh-caught fish.

Steps or ladder treads aboard a boat require some sort of nonslip/nonskid treatment. Typical solutions include: grit or sand embedded in the finish; an applied sandpaper or nonslip adhesive covering; or routing slots across each tread. Whoever buys this coupe will get a fine boat, but will need to make these steps safe for themselves.
