Westwood finds form, dominates
Trailing by two after just 4:17, Westwood’s Margot Spatola called timeout. The first-year girls lacrosse coach wasn’t about to let things unravel.
“There was no way we were getting out of that if we didn’t change the way that we were playing,” Spatola said. “We took that timeout, and the girls heard what we had to say.”
They certainly did. The Wolverines scored 15 goals by halftime on their way to a 22-8 blowout of No. 15 Medfield.
“We needed to work more as a team,” senior captain Haley Connaughton said. “(We were playing) more individual at that point. ... Once we started doing that, everything started to click.”
Connaughton scored back-to-back goals in the next 2:39 to tie the game at 3. No. 9 Westwood (5-2) took a 5-4 lead on a goal by Courtney Lyons, then went on a 10-2 run.
Connaughton, a UMass commit, had a game-high seven goals. Senior Georgia Salvatore added six, while sophomore Alex Finn tallied five.
“We knew who we were playing,” said Medfield coach Jason Heim. “When we play these elite teams, top teams in the state, we can learn from our mistakes, and mimic what they do right. (Westwood’s) perennial state champs, and still one of the best programs in the state.”
Maggie McCarthy and Lauren Sleboda led Medfield (4-2), each scoring two. Sophia Merageas made 13 saves.
In boys games, Mike Tobin scored four goals and added an assist to lead
Reading (7-2) in a 19-3 Middlesex League rout of Lexington. . . . Kevin Swenson and Pat Gillis scored five apiece as Ipswich (7-1) rolled 18-2 over Hamilton-Wenham in the Cape Ann League. . . . Tyler Morris scored the game-winner as Billerica (5-4) beat North Andover 11-10 in overtime in a Merrimack Valley clash.
In baseball, Matt Laurendeau picked up the win on the mound and drove in three runs as Arlington Catholic
(1-6) downed Matignon 8-2 in the Catholic Central League.
In Middlesex League softball, Christina Clark tossed a one-hitter, striking out 16 as Burlington (3-3) blanked Stoneham, 9-0. . . . Kelly Nelson threw a no-hitter and Norton (61) beat Holliston 8-0 in a Tri-Valley matchup.
